BIOGRAPHY
An Experimental/Industrial project hailing from Pensacola, Florida drawing heavily from post industrial and darkwave bands such as Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, and Project Pitchfork. Formed in 2006 as a side project of frontman Dom Price (Mod) as an alternative outlet for the darker side of his eclectic taste. Mod's confused, abstract lyrics and demented, tormented vocals are also notably harsh, being similar to those of Peter Spilles or Nivek Ogre; artists he openly cites and his foremost influences. Mod joined forces with longtime friend Christopher Stanley (c. Grendel) in early 2007 and formed what has become the core of Finite Automata's signature sound. The band was later joined by session musician Mat Porter in late 2007 who contributed to some of the band's more well known songs before his departure in early 2008. In September of 2008, the duo was joined by Vik Martinez, who, which his slew of guitars and noise making devices, added a much needed third layer to the band's overall sound.
The band's name is a reference to a theory in computer science regarding finite state machines (automatons); The name itself being a reference to Human Behavior as "Finite" or predictable in nature. Their highly confrontational live performances feature the use of strange contraptions, sharp objects, candles, wire, and various props. The subject matter they deal with is of a psychological nature, and personal torment and human fallacy is a recurrent theme in their work, which often takes a disturbingly fatalistic approach.
Their style is much akin to pioneers of the elektro industrial genre, citing the pioneering work of Skinny Puppy, Project Pitchfork and Cabaret Voltaire as just some of their foremost influences. Prefering the use of older keyboards, citing their harsher and more forceful sound, the band believes that sound experimentation, sampling and lyrical irony are at the heart of industrial music, and often see these techniques as a lost art.
